Catching words before they are lost

Someone said exactly what you needed. It was in a talk, a podcast, a recorded meeting. You remember the idea, roughly. The sentence, no. And you are not going to sit through two hours of audio to recover forty seconds.

The information was produced, broadcast, heard — and it is lost. Not deleted: unreachable, which amounts to the same thing.

This is not a failure of memory. Such content leaves no usable trace. It runs through platforms that keep it, index it for themselves, and hand you back nothing you can reuse.

Raw audio cannot be searched

An audio file is an opaque block. You cannot dig through it, quote a passage, cross-check it against another document, or verify who said what. You can only listen again, from start to finish, at the speed it was recorded.

Text does the opposite. It can be searched, annotated, quoted, linked. It fits in an index. It outlives the video it came from.

Transcription does more than convert a format. It turns speech from something remembered into something you can work with.

Catching is not enough

A transcript on its own is worth little. A thousand pages of raw text pose the same problem as the audio they came from: you do not know where to look.

What makes a source useful is what comes after. Finding a passage again without remembering where you read it. Bringing together two remarks that say the same thing differently. Telling apart what you noted yourself from what you merely skimmed.
